Hauser & Wirth Menorca

Virtual Reality Exhibition

A virtual reality experience featuring our gallery of the future

We have opened part of our forthcoming arts center in Menorca with a special exhibition throughout two of the eight galleries on the island, using our latest virtual reality technology. You can take the VR tour below on a desktop, mobile, or VR headset such as Google Cardboard.

Explore the island

Opening in 2021, Hauser & Wirth Menorca is an arts center on Isla del Rey. With long-standing collaborator of the gallery, architect Luis Laplace, we are conducting major conservation work to the island’s 18th century buildings. Take a 3D tour of the exterior gallery building restorations.

Experience the gallery

Hauser & Wirth Menorca will comprise of eight galleries, gardens by Piet Oudolf, a gallery shop, and a ‘cantina’ restaurant, all across a 1,500 square meter space. Through HWVR virtual reality, we have opened two of the largest galleries, shown here.

The making of

A first in virtual reality exhibition modeling, HWVR uses a bespoke technology-stack not found in any other industry. Drawing from techniques applied in architecture, construction and video-game design, the tool creates true-to-life scale and accuracy, as well as the authentic look, feel, and interactivity of our galleries.

Introducing ArtLab

ArtLab was formed to create bespoke technology solutions for the most pressing issues in the art world, including greater accessibility and sustainability. It began with intensive research in Summer 2019, focusing on practical steps towards responsibly reducing the gallery’s carbon footprint when organizing exhibitions globally.

Beside Itself

Named after a work by Lawrence Weiner featured at the entrance of the exhibition, ‘Beside Itself’ is a group show bringing together text-based works by Louise Bourgeois, Mark Bradford, Charles Gaines, Ellen Gallagher, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Luchita Hurtado, Mike Kelley, Glenn Ligon, Damon McCarthy, Paul McCarthy, Bruce Nauman, Lorna Simpson and Lawrence Weiner.

When we created ArtLab and first began developing the HWVR art experience, our primary goal was to develop technology that would help our artists visualize the spaces where their exhibitions would be presented. We were equally motivated by a desire to plan exhibitions for our locations around the globe in a way that would reduce the amount of travel and transportation.’—Iwan Wirth

Under the umbrella of Hauser & Wirth’s new global philanthropic and charitable initiative #artforbetter, we are donating 10% of gross profits from sales of all works in our online exhibitions to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization.
